Were Airstream trailers ever looked down on?

I vaguely recall an aunt living in an old Airstream trailer park in one of the oldest parks in town. They must have been grandfathered in because parking a trailer in the city was against the law. This was in the early to mid 1960s. Her husband had gone to Okinawa, and she had her two children living with her. Back then, living where she lived and in what she lived was considered a step down. Now I'm wondering if Airstreams were ever out of vogue? I mean, sometimes people look down on those living in house trailers. Here she was living in a silver house trailer. What are other people's memories of this era? I just remember my folks talking about it, and the family photo albums.

My reaction to this is "did anybody ever look down on someone who drove a Cadillac?" Airstreams are the Cadillaca of travel trailers. Anyone looking down on them doesn't really know about them.

Its only been within the last several years that they've become "trendy" again.
We used to have folks call up offering to pay to have them removed as refuse.

Ive seen discussions where folks ridicule and humiliate people who shop at Walmart.
From small minds come small thoughts.

There are literally millions of stories just like this. Everyone is on a path to somewhere.
Condescension just shows lack of maturity and/or intellect.

    Hilary Swank

Swank, a high school dropout, grew up in a trailer park in Washington and has said she was shunned
by classmates for being poor. Swank's father abandoned the family early on, leaving her mother to
fend for the family. When Swank was 15 her mother lost her job, and the two moved to California,
sleeping in their car or at the homes of friends.

We'll part ways there. Just because you can doesnt mean you should.
Something about first removing the beam from your own eye...

Thats all about fear and making yourself feel better at someone else's expense.
Doing it is easy. Just make sure you're willing to pay the tab when it arrives.

I don't know what it is that attracts these kinds of people to Walmart. But Airstreams have always been popular. Every now and then, new people take an interest in them, and then sales boom again.

An Airstream is a travel trailer and it is designed for travelling. Why would anyone look down on someone who wants a lifestyle built on travelling and invests in trailer desiged to support that? Whose business is it, anyhow?

I love it! People who are different make for great people watching. We all have our versions of weird. Some of my favorite people of all time have been weird. I just don't look down on them. Probably they look down on me. I don't let my cheeks hang out of my pants legs, though.

Re: Were Airstream trailers ever looked down on?

I recall a lady who lived in an old, run-down silver trailer in my town when I was growing up. People used to say she was a witch. She even had one of those old black washpots out in her yard that looked like a cauldron. My mom wouldn't let us go through her yard. Now that I look back on it, I think she was just an old lady who didn't have much money. Mom probably didn't want us children to bother her. Her trailer really was shoddy looking. I wonder where it is now.
