Have four cargo trailers of various sizes from 500 to 8000 lb capacity
Had a 87 Minnie Winnie but got rid of it for AS which I find to be easier to function with.

Question about radio in 76 Sovereign

On my 76 there is a AM/FM/8 track player which still works but not well. On AM the reception is almost non existant. I can get multiple stations on portables and other vehicle radios here but in 76 almost nothing.
On FM I get about five stations where I should be getting about 25.
I found the antenna coax on back of radio and unplugged it and reception went dead.
I can't find where the external antenna is for the broadcast radio?
I am thinking it might be broken off at the base????
Then again it might be hooked to the TV antenna which for some reason does not want to go up but have not looked at it from top to see what problem might be.
I see AS antennas on ebay and they are an external hull mount and I can't find where one of these ever was.
Being a ham radio operator I would like to get better reception.

    Hummer
Here are the schema for your trailer exterior mount stereo antenna.
I included also another option using an autocoupler which utilizes the
    TV antenna instead.

Keep in mind, although those old am/fm 8 tracks are very cool, the
    technology of the day was....

Unless there is evidence of a radio mount on the segment behind the roadside wrap window and above the mid line you have the illustration 2 setup. It was considered the upscale version. Clearer look don't ya know. Only problem it didn't work so good for long. Airstream gave up on it pretty soon after.

Pulling a new line is virtually impossible.

When they build your coach they attached everything to multiple anchor points. Starting at the radio the antenna wire runs up to the center of the ceiling, along the center section to a point above the TV/Radio autocoupler (place where you connect your TV antenna), then down to the autocoupler, back up as the combined antenna wire, and then forward to the TV antenna cable exit in the roof. All very securely anchored in place.

If you want to figure out how to peel the ceiling center section you can get to the radio antenna wire and mount a new, roof top antenna. But that's a WHOLE nother project.

There are so many layouts in that model in 76 - where is your radio located. Street or curbside flip out? Or elsewhere. Depending it may be "relatively" easy to fish a cable and mount an original earlier style antenna.

There are a couple options here that people have also chosen - one out the frige vent and one losing a center marker light.

Here is link to an original style antenna - the base is a direct replacement.
    AN519 - JENSEN Rooftop/Side Mount Antenna

I replaced the shaft with an extendable from Advance Auto Parts that has an AM booster in the shaft. Keep in mind that Airstream mounted that antenna before the interior skins went on. In order to service/remove it you used a 3" hole saw on the interior skin to access the the mounting screws. It was then patched with a piece of matching skin - or not - as it was hidden behind the curbside front drapes.

Re: Question about radio in 76 Sovereign

I'm having the same issue with my 1974 sovereign! Where the heck is the antenna?!? Anyone know on my 1974? There is a snapped off something behind where the radio is on the outside... but it has TWO wires coming out of it.... is that it?

    Thanks,
    Leo
