    South Carolina find

We were passing through SC last October and decided to pull over for the night into something other than a truck stop. Found this great campground in a town called Modoc, it's an Army Corps of Engineers spot on Strom Thurmond lake. Now being a Yankee, outside of the Cape Cod Canal, Army Corps developments are a bit of a mystery to me. This camp ground was a rare find indeed. They put us on a site right on the lake, $22 a night. Half that if you find yourself in the golden era of senior citizenship. (I'll pay the extra eleven-bucks for another 10 years, no need to rush things)

Everything was high quality from the grill and fire pit to electric and water hook ups. Very clean and personable staff. Only thing lacking was a sanitary hook up at the site, you'll need to use the dump station at the entrance. Small price to pay in exchange for water front real estate.

    They can be found at:

    296 Modoc Camp Road
    Modoc, SC 29838

Looks great - but is this one of the campgrounds that you are required to be military or ex-military in order to stop at?

Nope. Corp of Engineer campgrounds come under the new version of the old Golden Age passes. It's now called the America the Beautiful Program. America the Beautiful - National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass

Participating agencies include the National Park Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture - Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation are open to everyone.

Google Corp of Engineer campgrounds for a bunch of listings

That's a pretty spot. We stayed at one in Washington and it also was on the water, pretty, quiet, well maintained, and economical. There is a directory I think of the various campgrounds. The National Park pass is a great way to go. It saves a lot of money and goes for a great cause.
