    Rally fun and games

I am curious about what other Units do for fun and games at their rallies. Hearing what you have to say might give us all some new ideas.

What are the favorite activities of your members? Are all your activities organized or do some just happen? If there are costs involved, are they included in the rally fee or are they a separate item? What is the most unique activity your Unit has done at a rally?

This is one of the most important threads I've seen posted in a long time. One of the things that has been of most concern to member retention and new member involvement is coming up with new and exciting activities for our rallies...appealing to the new freshmen WBCCI member while at the same time not forgetting the Sophomores, Juniors and Senior members...

Here are a few suggestions that I want to see our unit do....Outdoor movies .. complete with popcorn, picnics and hot dog weiner roasts...

Home made Ice Cream Crank off competition...where we are all judges and winners...

How about a Eat your deserts first banquet dinner...homemade deserts..

It all boils down to Fun, Fellowship...Adventure...

    ideas

Rockwell you have some great ideas.

The Monterey Bay CA Unit in the 1970's, 80's and 90's was a very active Unit and they probably still are. They did everything - card games and other types of games, skits, they showed movies, went on tours of local points of interest, special meals, show and tell, craft projects, you name it, they probably did it. This picture is a sample.

For the SNU, we tend towards the unorganized, unplanned activities like visiting nearby hot springs, biking & hiking tours near our rally site, fishing, and having ad-hoc concerts by the campfire. One of our favorite events was our fruit smoothie and waffle brunch we had at a rally. Then there was the practice session for our yoyo tournament

We have done some great organized things like a private tour of the ghost town of Bodie, brunch in a historic bed and breakfast, a service project with the Friends of Inyo National Forest, cooking breakfast at the Lyon County Fly In, and participating in amateur radio field day.

I think the big thing is not to get caught up in the idea that activities need a committee and a lot of planning and preparation to be fun. Sometimes the more spontaneous things are the biggest success. Also you don't have to worry about finding some one to volunteer to do the planning and everyone can chip in to make things happen

    rally activities

At the VAC rally in Laramie, there was a poetry contest, either cowboy poetry or Airstream poetry, read after dinner on Sat night. Very good response, and the winner was a young man in his teens who not only made up poetry but played his guitar to accompany himself. There was also a scavenger hunt, but I was so busy socializing, I didn't have time to participate in that. The rallies always seem too short to visit with all my Vintage buddies.

The Kentucky unit just had it's anual Rte 127 yard sale rally. There were 14 units attending at member Bishop's house in Russell Springs, Ky. The highlight of the rally is "show and tell" on Saturday night when each attendee shows a yard sale purchase and tells the story about the item purchased. This year we had a clock bought for 2 dollars that was made from a car timing chain and gear, an antique tool for making barrel staves. The 127 yard sale covers Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky.

What a neat idea and a great way to take advantage of an unique local event.

    Re: Rally fun and games

By now most WBCCI Units should have a pretty good grasp on their rally schedule for 2010. Has anyone got some big plans for their rallies? Anything unique or different? What are you doing in 2010 that you haven't done before? Are you going someplace new?

How many units are celebrating an anniversary - 5th, 10th, 20th. etc? What are you planning on doing to celebrate?

    special celebrations

We are heading into a very busy time of year and one full of special celebrations. What does your Unit do to celebrate the upcoming holidays? Do you have a special rally or luncheon? Do you do something special for your Unit members? What about special invitations to referrals and other potential members that you have contacted over the year? What about the kids in your Unit? Do you do something special for them or have them help with some aspect of your holiday celebrations? Have you considered having the musicians in your Unit perform for a local convalescent or senior center? What about the pets in your Unit? Maybe have a holiday pet parade? Does your Unit have a favorite holiday tradition or holiday menu that everyone looks forward to? What about a holiday cookie baking extravaganza?

Lets hear from you. Share your Unit's special celebrations. Show us some pictures.

    Re: Rally fun and games

The Texas Gulf Coast Unit gets a lot of members together and we go caroling to a lot of folks at Texas Airstream Harbor. Some have said that they had never been caroled to or that that was the first time in as many as 40 years. We all get a blessing out of it, singing traditional Christmas Carols and Praising the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. We all don the Santa Hats and have become known as the Singling Flamingos. See the attached card we print for presentation.
