They are members of the board of trustees for the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, named for the inventor of the trailer that for them is a way of life.
This week, the club's trustees are taking care of business, including the remnants of a debate that threatened to cause a schism in the club in the 1980s.
Airstream had begun producing modern, self-propelled motor homes, a move that deeply offended Airstream purists. At first, only motor homes with the classic metallic frame were allowed in the club. Today, some motor homes in the club scarcely are recognizable as Airstreams but for the name on the side.
Club members said purists have relented during the past 25 years because of the need for new members. Membership dropped from 27,000 to about 6,000 today. Club spokesman Leonard Sullivan said he's not certain about the cause, but rises in fuel prices are a major factor.
